The Steam Room Revelation: Understanding True Empathy in Leadership

As an EI Strategist, insights often come in unexpected moments. Recently, while exiting a steam room, I joked about having more empathy for lobsters. This lighthearted comment sparked a deeper reflection on the nature of authentic empathy in #leadership.


True empathy isn't a checkbox on a manager's daily task list or a #performance metric to be measured. It's an internal transformation that spreads through one's consciousness like contrast dye in a medical scan, illuminating areas previously unseen. When leaders claim they "don't have time" for empathy or that it's not part of their KPIs, they fundamentally misunderstand its nature and power.


This reminded me of a conversation with a CEO who once told me, "I'm too busy for all this emotional stuff." Yet this same leader couldn't understand why his teams weren't performing at their peak, why innovation was stagnant, why he was not a connecting force and why talent kept walking out the door.
